The New World of Intelligent Agents

Intelligent agents represent the next leap in capability for software systems. Based upon Agent Oriented Software's research and development work on software agent technologies, JACK™ offers a way to commercially exploit the power of intelligent agents. JACK is a framework that allows developers to design, build, debug, integrate and run intelligent agents in information systems.

What, exactly, is an intelligent agent? It's an encapsulated computer system that works within larger systems, or in other environments. Agents are capable of flexible autonomous action within that larger system or environment. Their goal is to achieve design objectives.

Communicating Intelligent Agents

What makes an intelligent agent different from conventional, object oriented software? Lots of things, but the most important is that agents can reason. They experience their environment (that larger system they "live" in) through sensors and can act through effectors; they're reactive, responding in a timely fashion to sensed environmental change; they're proactive, anticipating future goals; and agents can work in teams as humans do, collaborating within their encapsulated system to achieve objectives.

Intelligent agents are not an application in themselves. They are the facilitators of a new generation of advanced applications. Intelligent agents will spawn a new generation of games with more convincing characters, with the game player setting their goals, selecting the good-guy and bad-guy teams and overseeing the

Intelligent agents could even imbue the heroes with dark sides and the villains with redemptive qualities that are reflected in their decision-making.

First Flight — True UAV Autonomy At Last

Melbourne, Australia, 6th July 2004.

In a world first, truly autonomous, Intelligent Agent-controlled flight was achieved by a Codarra ‘Avatar’ unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The flight tests were conducted in restricted airspace at the Australian Army’s Graytown Range about 60 miles north of Melbourne. The Avatar was guided by an on-board JACK™ intelligent software agent that directed the aircraft’s autopilot during the course of the mission.

Being presented at Unmanned Unlimited.
